There is so much to do in the Sunny South Hams. There are wonderful beaches, stunning walks, fabulous restaurants, cosy pubs, and activities galore.
You are right on the beach at Kingsgrove, but it doesn’t have to be just swimming and sandcastles at East Portlemouth. You can take in the local scenery with a walk along the nearby National Trust Coast Path. Or, if you want to inject a little adrenaline into the day, you can find water sports available through groups such as Sea N Shore, the Island Cruising Club, Salcombe Yacht Club and South Sands Sailing. Alternatively there are golf course, horse riding, tock-climbing, cycling routes and a whole host of activities all nearby. |

The Salcombe-Kingsbridge Rivermaid offers a wonderful scenic cruise along the estuary between Kingsbridge and Salcombe and runs from Easter to October. The South Sands Ferry is a fun way of travelling from Salcombe town (Whitestrand) to South Sands where there is a fabulous hotel where you can have breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner overlooking the beach. Explosures, the photographer’s gallery, was established in 2001 in the heart of Salcombe. Run by Kathryn and supported by a strong team of enthusiastic and talented photographers Explosures welcomes customers back year after year. Many say their family holidays wouldn’t be complete without having their yearly exposures with Explosures! |
The Pigs Nose in East Prawle (the nearest pub by road to Kingsgrove and a bit wacky!)
Gara Rock Restaurant - located on the South West Coast path along the cliffs from East Portlemouth, stunning views enroute - approx 30-40 minute walk depending on the route taken! The Millbrook Inn at Southpool (a gastro pub of tiny proportions!) & remember, don't drive on the low road at high tide! The Tower Inn in Slapton is also very good, with a lovely garden overlooking the tower at the rear. The Cricket Inn at Beesands is located right on the beach overlooking Start Bay and has excellent sea food. Perfect pub to go to after a walk round Start Point and a trip to Start Point Lighthouse. |
There are many pubs & restaurants in Salcombe town which you need to take the passenger ferry to. A family favourite is Captain Flint's or try the Island Street Bar & Grill. The Salcombe Coffee Company does a fine breakfast, but for us the best breakfast for the family is at the Winking Prawn at North Sands. There is lots of space inside and out, and in the summer they also do an outside BBQ. The Kings Arms at Whitestrand is always good for a bite to eat and a few beers and so is the Victoria Inn, which also has a great children's play area at the back. The Ferry Inn is great for a pint while you enjoy the beautiful views across the estuary, and the Fortescue Inn is also a popular pub for drinkers. You should also try the South Sands Hotel which has an excellent restaurant with a wonderful terrace overlooking South Sands beach.
